A-E Key Terminology

Adverse Driving Conditions

An exception to the Hours of Service rules allowing a driver to extend their driving window by up to 2 hours if they encounter unforeseen weather or traffic conditions that were not apparent at the time of dispatch.

Coercion

Threatening a driver to violate a regulation (like HOS or vehicle maintenance) by withholding work or threatening employment termination. This is a severe violation for carriers and shippers alike.

ELD (Electronic Logging Device)

Hardware that synchronizes with a vehicle engine to automatically record driving time for easier, more accurate HOS recording. Mandatory for most interstate carriers since December 2017.

F-Z Key Terminology

Form and Manner

Specific data elements required on a log (electronic or paper) such as shipping document numbers, trailer numbers, dates, and signatures. Often a source of “low hanging fruit” violations during audits.

Personal Conveyance (PC)

The movement of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) for personal use while off-duty. A driver may record time operating a CMV for personal conveyance as off-duty only when the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work.
